Homemade Finnish-Style Burgers
Homemade Finnish-Style Burgers (Lihapiirakka-Inspired)
These Finnish-style burgers take inspiration from lihapiirakka, a traditional Finnish meat-filled pastry, but with a burger twist. Instead of a regular bun, we use soft, slightly sweet dough (or a brioche bun substitute), and we pack in the bold, tangy flavors of Finland with mustard, pickles, and creamy sauces.
Ingredients (Makes 4 Burgers)
For the Burger Patties:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp allspice (for that Nordic touch!)
- 1 tbsp Dijon or Finnish mustard
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
For the Toppings:
- 4 soft buns (brioche or lihapiirakka-style dough)
- 4 slices of Finnish-style cheese (like Oltermanni or Havarti)
- ½ cup pickles, sliced (Finnish-style vinegar pickles work best)
- ½ cup shredded lettuce (optional)
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Finnish mustard (or any strong, tangy mustard)
For Serving:
- Ketchup (Finns love their Turun sinappi mustard with ketchup!)
- Additional mustard for drizzling
- Crispy potato wedges or fries
Instructions:
Prepare the Patties:
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, salt, pepper, allspice, mustard, onion, and garlic until just combined.
- Form into 4 patties, slightly larger than the buns (they’ll shrink when cooked).
- Let them rest for about 10 minutes while you prepare the toppings.
Cook the Patties:
- Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat.
- Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
- Add cheese slices on top in the last minute of cooking and cover to melt.
Assemble the Burgers:
- Toast the buns lightly.
- Mix mayonnaise with Finnish mustard and spread on the bottom bun.
- Layer lettuce (if using), pickles, burger patty, red onion slices, and a drizzle of extra mustard and ketchup.
- Top with the second bun and serve warm!
Serving Tip:
Pair these burgers with crispy fries, lingonberry soda, or even a side of creamy potato salad for a full Finnish-inspired meal.
